Harmonic sells optical transmission unit for $46mn

UK firm Aurora Networks has bought the optical transmission equipment business of US company Harmonic for US$ 46mn, as part of efforts to increase its installed base for next-generation service-providing products.

London-based Aurora Networks describes the acquisition as placing it in a solid position to withstand the “industry turbulence” that is expected to continue into 2014, and plans to focus on a product strategy that addresses “targeted problems” at a time when many of its rivals are broadening their product ranges.

“We’ve entered into this agreement because Aurora Networks is an established, trusted and well respected industry player,” said Patrick Harshman, CEO and president of Harmonic. “The direction of Harmonic has evolved to shift away from Cable Access and we selected Aurora Networks to purchase our Cable Access business because of its scale, strategic focus and commitment to customer care.”
