Home control heading for the mass market
Despite numerous false dawns, home control systems may finally be on the brink of mass market take-up, thanks to the emergence of low power wireless technologies and the increasingly willingness of consumers to fine-tune their home networks themselves, according to US research firm MRG.
In addition to these factors, service providers have been trying much harder recently to attack this market of late (including national US telcos AT&T and Verizon), including within their packages apps for smartphones and tablets that let consumers control home security devices while on the go.
All this means that global shipments of home control devices are forecast to rise from 5mn in 2012 to 65mn in 2017, while device revenues are expected to reach US$ 2.7bn in 2017.
Despite these healthy prospects however, challenges still remain according to MRG – with the main one being that the potential customer base does not fully understand the benefits of such systems, due partly to the fact that they are hard to explain in short advertising pitches.
This likely means that growth will only come when more consumers become familiar with home control and security systems, according to the report.
