Huggers on Intel’s TV plans: “This is not a bunch of amateurs”
US chip maker Intel is perfectly positioned to transform the television industry with a bold new service delivered over-the-top, says Erik Huggers, corporate VP of Intel Media, adding that the company has a number of compelling assets relevant to the task.

After confirming for the first time last week that Intel is working on an OTT video service which can be accessed by a dedicated set-top box, Huggers was at pains to clarify in a subsequent interview that the “dream team” he has assembled (with the blessing of outgoing Intel CEO Paul Ottelini) is “not a bunch of amateurs”, coming as they do from companies like Apple, Microsoft and Rovi.
In addition to its semiconductor technology, Intel also counts more than 10,000 software programmers, specialist expertise in open-source software, and a substantial venture capital arm (Intel Capital), which supports start-ups that Huggers says have some expertise relevant to the service his team is developing.
At this stage however there seem to be two major challenges facing Huggers and his team: firstly, no content deals appear to have been signed, and secondly the planned leadership transition in May from Otellini to an interim CEO – who may or may not support the ambitious new media venture.
