South Korean electronics firm Samsung has revealed plans to introduce an Evolution kit for its 2012 smart TVs at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) due to kick off in Las Vegas next week, boosting their hardware and enabling them to offer the latest features offered by its 2013 models.

Designed to address repeated complaints that its expensive smart TVs are rapidly made obsolescent by new models, the Evolution Kit attaches to the back of a 2012 Samsung Smart TV and delivers hardware enhancements such as CPU, memory and GPU up to the level of the latest Smart TV.

The kit will enable users to enjoy faster speeds for browsing the Internet and multitask by using apps while watching TV, and transforms the 2012 Smart Hub interface into the 2013 version, which features five different panels where consumers can enjoy a wide range of content including linear TV programmes, video-on-demand, apps and Internet browsing. In addition, Samsung’s Smart Interaction features such as voice control and motion control will also be enhanced.

“Evolution Kit has opened a new era of Smart TV and completed a true Smart TV with its innovative concept, which fits in the rapidly changing IT trends”, said Sunny Lee, executive vice president of Visual Display Sales & Marketing Team, Samsung Electronics. “Consumers can enjoy the latest features and services every year without having to purchase a brand new set. Samsung Smart TV users will enjoy Timeless TV that transcends time with Evolution Kit.”
