ZTE planning 3D-capable Android-based STBs
Chinese telecoms equipment vendor ZTE is planning to launch digital TV set-top boxes based on the Android operating platform and capable of delivering 3D television services.
Bloomberg reports that the boxes will be sold in the “near future” and will allow video calling as well as support the growing HTML5 standard. The plans come one day after ZTE reached an agreement with content protection experts Nagra, which will allow ZTE to sell its set-top boxes to Nagra customers.
ZTE took a major blow to its ambitions for the US telecoms market yesterday, after the US House of Representative Intelligence Committee reported that the company poses a security risk (along with fellow Chinese vendor Huawei), as it “cannot be trusted to be free of foreign state influence”.
